A kidnapper in the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak killed both his child hostages to stop their crying on Wednesday, but he never stopped demanding a ransom.
Le Van Vui, who was caught later the same night, told the police he needed money to pay gambling debts of more than VND500 million (US$26,300).
He said he was afraid the children's crying would reveal his hiding place, so he killed them an hour and a half after abducting them. However, that didn't stop him from still demanding a ransom.
Vui, from the northern province of Thanh Hoa, asked local children Do Quang Huy and Nguyen Huu Duy Thuc to follow him on Tuesday. Huy, 9, was the son of a private businessman and 8-year-old Thuc was the son of a beauty salon owner, according to Dan Tri newswire.
That night, he kept sending messages to the children's families asking for VND800 million ($42,000) in ransom and threatened to kill the boys if the families called police.
But Huy and Thuc's remains were soon found near a local cemetery. Their bodies had been burned.
