The Ho Chi Minh City People's Court has upheld a verdict against Vo Thanh Phi of Hoc Mon District who was found guilty of kidnapping a man to demand ransom in 2009.

Phi had failed to collect US$30,000 from a friend of Le Van Truong who had lost the money in illegal betting on a football match.

On October 19 in 2009, he asked six others to kidnap Truong and took him to a hotel in Cambodia. Truong was forced to write a debt note accepting that he would pay his friend's gambling debt.

A week later, Truong was taken to a hotel in Binh Dinh, but he managed to escape and report the case to the police.

Phi, who had managed to escape an arrest warrant for a year, was caught in 2010 and sentenced to eight years in jail. His accomplices were also sentenced to various jail terms for illegal detainment of a person.
