Police in central Vietnam have arrested a couple reportedly on the run after piling up debts of around VND60 billion (US$2.87 million).

They had left behind three children, a one month old infant, in the care of relatives in Hung Yen Province, not far from Hanoi.

Nguyen Van Luong, 35, and his 31-year-old wife, Phan Thi Dinh, were arrested in Khanh Hoa Province Monday.

Investigators from the northern province said they had received accusations from people who had lent the couple around VND60 billion between 2010 and October 2011 with promises of high interest rates, but they had received little return from the investment.

One lender, Pham Thi Toan, said she gave the couple VND10.8 billion, which they lent to other people at higher interest rates.

Hung Yen police announced a national warrant for the couple on June 4.

Lieutenant Colonel Ho Trong Bang of the provincial police department affirmed the couple has three children, including one born less than a month ago.

The couple will be sent back to Hung Yen for further investigations, he said.
