Investigators from Vietnam's top prosecution office Sunday suggested charges of power abuse to appropriate others' property against a former police officer.

Dang Van Phuoc, former senior investigator in the Mekong Delta's Vinh Long Province, had in June 2009 seized more than VND8 million and several assets from a gambling ring and used the money for his personal purposes.

In February the same year, Phuoc was received VND2.5 million in bribes from a woman to guarantee security for her gambling ring.

Phuoc's former subordinate Nguyen Van Du, directly involved in accepting the money, should face the same charges, the investigators have suggested.

They said Phuoc and Du's actions posed a danger to society at large and earned the police a bad reputation.

Vinh Long police and prosecutors were also suggested to check the responsibility of other officers in Phuoc's unit, the Tam Binh District police division, and take necessary measures.
