Vietnam's top prosecution office says it is considering charging two police officers with using corporal punishment on a suspect who died soon after an interrogation they didn't have a warrant for.
Investigators at the Supreme People's Procuracy said in a Friday statement to the Police Department of Phu Yen Province in south-central Vietnam that Major Nguyen Minh Quyen and First Lieutenant Pham Ngoc Man would be put under further investigation for the death of the suspect in May.
Ngo Thanh Kieu, a 30-year-old suspected member of a criminal gang, fainted during police questioning in May and died later, despite treatment at a local hospital.
Quyen and Man had directly interrogated Kieu.
Several police officers had arrested Kieu at his house, handcuffing him without a warrant.
