A police officer in the south central region's Ninh Thuan Province was suspended Tuesday as the investigation into the death of a man who died in police custody continues.
Ninh Thuan police did not release the name of the police officer in question.
The detained resident Tran Gon died Monday night at a hospital due to multiple head injuries incurred at the My Hai Ward police station in the beach town of Phan Rang.
Gon, 27, was arrested on suspicion of stealing charity money from a local pagoda.
Another local resident who was identified only by his initials said Gon was in good health when he was brought to the police station on Sunday.
But Gon's wife Nguyen Thi Diem said he was severely injured when she visited him at the the police station an hour after his detainment. Diem then asked to send Gon to Ninh Thuan General Hospital.
A doctor at the hospital, who wished not to be named, said Gon had been admitted in critical condition and had to be supported with a respirator due to brain injuries.
