Authorities in the southern province of Tay Ninh have suspended a police officer who allegedly tortured a woman in custody the previous week after suspecting her of stealing a colleague’s phone.
Preliminary investigations found that Ly Cong Van, a police officer at the Trang Bang Industrial Zone, had repeatedly hit Lai Thi Thu in her legs, stomach and head, causing serious injuries, during an interrogation last Monday.
An unnamed colleague of Thu, 23, at the industrial zone had put a mobile phone in a carton box she used to carry her belongings on October 19 though she warned the colleague it was not safe.
The VND11 million phone was later found missing.
Van summoned Thu the next day for a three-hour interrogation, during which he reportedly also hit her on the head with a cudgel.
“I said I did not steal the mobile phone and that he should investigate, and he started torturing me,” Thu told VTC News from a local hospital, where she has been admitted with serious injuries on her legs and stomach and bruises on her face.
She was later cleared after police examined a security camera at her work place.
Thu said: “Van visited my family, asking us to forget what happened. I had suffered a terribly unjust accusation, and all I want is my honor back.”
Thu was released from the hospital yesterday.
Van on Monday admitted to have beaten Thu during the interrogation.
"I had lost my control," said Van.
Authorities said they are considering further measures against Van.
