A police officer in the southern province of Binh Duong was suspended Saturday pending investigation into a hit and run case that left one person dead.
Captain Le Quang Binh had hit a local motorist in Binh Duong Province at around 7 p.m. Thursday when driving in a car.
The victim Nguyen Huu Quan fell on the street and died at Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City early Saturday morning.
Nguyen Van Meo, a local who joined a public chase that happened immediately after, said Binh did not stop after Quan fell from his motorbike.
He kept driving although the motorbike was stuck to the front of the car, said Meo.
Binh was stopped around four kilometers from the accident scene.
"Even after stopping, the driver still sat inside with the doors closed, despite around a hundred people shouting and threatening to break the doors," he said.
Local traffic police arrived at the scene shortly after.
Binh's family later visited Quan's family and gave them VND30 million (US$1,432).
The victim, 27, was a factory worker and the sole breadwinner in his family.
Investigations found that before Quan, the police officer had grazed another motorist but did not stop either.
