Police say an allegedly drunk city Ho Chi Minh City cop ran over a pedestrian and his son on Sunday afternoon, killing the father instantly and severely injuring the 9-year-old boy.
Nguyen Van Xin, a District 4 police officer, reportedly fled the scene in his car right after the accident, leaving the two victims lying on Ben Dinh Road in suburban Cu Chi District.
The 35-year old man Vo Van Hon died immediately while his son, Vo Thanh Dat, passed out from his injuries.
Doctors later said that the impact shattered Dat's arm and fractured his skull.
The father and son were walking back home from their field and were just 300 meters from their front door when Xin's Innova approached from behind them at a high speed.
Hon’s father, Vo Van Tat, was making repairs to his home’s roof and witnessed the horrifying scene.
Tat said he saw Hon take Dat up in his arm and tried to dive to safety but the 7-seater car overtook them.
“I ran to the scene and spread my arms out, trying to stop the car, but it rapidly fled,” said Tat.
Many witnesses told Tuoi Tre that they had seen the car swerving down the road, narrowly missing a number of pedestrians. The driver seemed to be drunk and out of his control, witnesses said.
Local police later escorted the driver and his car to the Cu Chi Police Station. Police haven't revealed how they tracked down and stopped the car.
A police representative says they are investigating the case.
