Cop faces dismissal for beating up 11-year-old boy

Police authorities of Thua Thien-Hue Province in central Vietnam are considering dismissing from service a local officer who badly beating up an 11-year-old boy while interrogating him at a police station.

A report by the police of Hue City, where the incident happened on June 15, confirmed that Sub-lieutenant Tran Nguyen Hong Quang used a baton to beat the boy in the police station of Thuy Xuan Ward.

The report proposed that Quang be dismissed, and Lieutenant-colonel Nguyen Anh, deputy chief of the police station, be removed from his post and transferred to another office.


Police officer suspended for beating 11-year-old boy

According to the report, on June 15, Anh ordered Quang to privately interrogate Ngo Dinh Phat, a fifth grader, after Phat's aunt took him to the police station for stealing VND3.1 million (US$150) while visiting her house.

Quang used a baton to beat Phat during the interrogation.

After Phat returned home, he developed fever and convulsions.

Phat was later admitted to a local hospital with serious bruises on his legs and buttocks.
