Police in the northeastern province of Bac Giang Sunday arrested two drug smugglers, one of them a commune police officer, after they were found transporting 22 kilograms of heroin in a truck.

Song A Lu, 37, and Trang A Chu, 46, of Son La Province were stopped by police at around 1 a.m. while they were in a truck traveling through a rural village in Bac Giang's Hiep Hoa District.

The truck was taken to a police station and it took three hours for the police to find 22 brick-shaped packs of heroin, weighing 22 kilograms, hidden in it,

Lu, a police officer of Long Luong Commune in the northwestern province of Son La, confessed that he and Chu a ring leader had successfully smuggled heroin from northwestern provinces to Bac Giang many times before.

Based on Lu's testimony, police arrested another drug smuggler in Thai Nguyen Province at around 10 a.m. the same day.

Bac Giang police said they had been following the drug smuggling led by Chu for more than a year and had tried to bust the ring previously but failed.

Ten days ago, following tip-offs that Chu and other gang members would transport heroin in a truck from Son La to Bac Giang, the police set up a plan to nab them.

According to the police, Lu was once commended for successfully persuading drug smugglers in his commune to give themselves up to police.

In Vietnam, those convicted of smuggling more than 600 grams of heroin can be sentenced to death.
