Six workers from a fisheries factory in the Mekong Delta died Wednesday and another was injured in what local media have reported was a case of either toxic gas poisoning or drowning.

The accident happened at around 9 a.m. at a Tourism and Fisheries Company (TRISEDCO) factory in Dong Thap Province's Lap Vo District.

The perished victims, all men and between 20 and 39-years-old, were Mai Huu Ton, Trieu Ba Ha, Lam Thanh Phong, Tran Tan Loi, Le Dinh Thai and Le Xuan Thuan.

The injured worker, Dang Van An, 26, is being treated at Lap Vo General Hospital.

The workers were collecting fish fat samples, stored in a vertical large cylindrical tank for safety tests, when they were poisoned by toxic gas, Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper cited an unnamed source as saying.

Meanwhile, VietNamNet news website quoted an unnamed worker [not the injured one] as saying that a worker fell into the tank and the six others jumped in to rescue him.

"The accident happened when they attempted to save each other in the fish fat tank and was not caused toxic gas," the worker said.

Dong Thap authorities have instructed the police to find out what actually happened.
