Police in Ho Chi Minh City have arrested five people including a truck driver and his assistant who conspired to steal container cargo.

On July 2, Dang Van Vuong, 23, Tran Hong Chi, 29, Dau Minh Tam, 25, allegedly stole cashew nuts from a truck of Tran Quoc Company based in Tay Ninh Province neighboring HCMC.

They were helped by driver Le Trong Phuc, 31, who drove the truck from Cat Lai Port in HCMC to Tay Ninh, along with his driving assistant Thai Hoang Anh, 27.

Phuc stopped at a gas station while the other four removed two tons of the cashews in 25 bags out of the truck.

The thieves were caught red-handed.

According to investigations, Anh and Phuc had discussed the operation on June 30.

Earlier, in two separate incidents, the group had successfully stolen cashew nuts and wheat flour, which they sold for more than VND40 million (US$1,940), VnExpress reported.

Container thieves facing serious prison time
Anh alone had earned more than VND60 million stealing iron bars in three different occasions with the help of another driver, whose name was not released.

Stealing container cargo makes the goods' owner lose the trust of their customers and lengthens the transport time, police said.

Police are expanding the investigation and are looking for additional suspects.
