Police in the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak on Sunday arrested a man for allegedly posing as a journalist to extort VND 40 million (US$1,780) from the police by claiming he had videos of officers violating the law and threatening to publicize them.
Pham Hoang Phong, 23, was apprehended Saturday night while taking the money from a group of traffic police officers at a coffee shop in the Buon Ma Thuot town.
Phong, a college graduate, had Wednesday called the traffic police department, claiming he had the evidence and that he was a reporter for a local newspaper.
He then said officers had to bring the money to the coffee shop -- where he was arrested – failing which he would send the clips to a news website.
He later told the police he did not have any incriminating photos or videos, and the blackmail idea had flashed through his mind after seeing a group of traffic police officers on duty on a street.
