City man caught selling fake train tickets

Police and railway authorities in Ho Chi Minh City on Tuesday arrested a local selling fake train tickets for travel during the busy Tet season.

The police seized 19 tickets, including eight for journeys from HCMC to Da Nang on January 30 and 11 for return journeys on February 9.

Nguyen Thanh Thien, the seller, was taken to the local police station, facing charges.

Every year, there is a sharp spike in travel during the country's largest festival Lunar New Year which falls February 3 this year.

HCMC police earlier caught people selling 33 train tickets to Hanoi, Hue, Da Nang at black market prices of around VND22 million (US$1,130) in total.

Authorities at Saigon Railway Station have cautioned residents against buying tickets outside the station to avoid being overcharged or cheated.

People can call to the station for bookings and tickets will be delivered to their homes, said Nguyen Van Thanh, deputy head of the station.
