A Ho Chi Minh City court on Wednesday sentenced a man to three and a half years for snatching an iPhone from a Singaporean tourist in the city downtown late last year.
Le Minh Khuong, 34, was tried in an outdoor hearing by the HCMC People’s Court, Tien Phong newspaper reported.
According to the indictment, at around 1 a.m. on December 18, 2014, Khuong drove a motorbike on Pham Ngu Lao Street in District 1 and saw the Singaporean tourist, known as Lee, walking on the pavement with an iPhone 6 in his hand.
Khuong approached Lee and grabbed the phone.
He sped up to flee the scene.
Lee shouted for help. Two police officers, who were patrolling the street on a motorbike, chased after Khuong.
Khuong dangerously zig-zagged down the road in an attempt to escape the pursuing officers.
The chase continued through many streets.
When Khuong arrived at the intersection of Nguyen Thai Hoc and Nguyen Cong Tru streets in District 1, a pursuing cop kicked his bike and knocked him down.
He was arrested afterwards.
