Police in the northern city of Hai Phong have arrested four Chinese nationals for allegedly stealing nearly VND4 billion (US$189,000) from Vietnamese banks by hacking credit card numbers.

Lin Li Hua, 32, Xi Xong Jie, 34, Lin Wel, 49, and Lin Ji Jun, 20, are accused of stealing foreigners' credit card information on the Internet in order to make transactions at local banks.

According to online newspaper Dan Tri, they withdrew VND3.9 billion in cash from Vietcombank and Viettinbank ATMs between March 16 and 26.

Following the banks' reports of the suspicious transactions, police launched investigations into the case.

A police search of the Chinese nationals' rooms at a local hotel produced some samples of hijacked credit card information, five credit cards, along with three laptops, eight mobile phones, and VND996 million ($47,000) in cash.

Police said the foreigners will be investigated on charges of "using computers, telecommunications, the Internet and digital devices to steal the property of others."

The case is being investigated further.
