Patches of water hyacinth float on the surface of a river in southern Vietnam. A tangle of the plant saved the life of a 4-year old boy who floated 10 kilometers down a stream near his home in An Giang Province.
The 4-year old boy found floating in a stream 10 kilometers from his home earlier this month has recuperated from his long journey, police in the southern province of An Giang said Tuesday.
The boy’s parents have agreed to keep a closer watch over him, Nguyen Nhu, the sheriff of An Phu district’s Vinh Truong ward said.
Nguyen Quoc Phong went missing in the morning of May 18.
His parents suspected that he'd gone to bathe in a spot on the Hau river where his father usually took him to wash.
The family conducted a frantic search of the nearby riverbank but failed to find the boy.
At midnight, the same day, a couple of fishermen spotted Phong floating down the river -- 10 kilometers from his home -- using a tangle of water hyacinth as a buoy.
The fishermen rushed him to a local hospital where doctors treated him for severe sunburn blisters on his back and thighs.
