Vietnam's Ministry of Justice has assigned counsel to a nine-month-old girl who suffered horrific abuse from her mother in the southern province of Dong Thap.
In the latest news, the ministry asked officials at Dong Thap's Center for Legal Assistance to assign lawyers to represent the interests of Nguyen Thi Nhu Y when the case is brought to court.
Y is now being taken care by her neighbor Nguyen Thi Bay in Long Hau Commune, while her mother Nguyen Thi Xuan Lan, 33, is being held in custody pending further investigation.
Lan's lover, 34-year-old Le Thanh Tam, was also arrested last month for allegedly abusing Y and filming the abuse on his mobile phone.
The suspects told police they beat the girl because she was a source of bad luck for the family. They believed that hitting her would drive misfortune away.
Lan's parents, Tran Thi Hanh and Nguyen Van Kiet, were also accused of beating the girl, but the couple remains free, for the time being.
The baby was brought to a local hospital with multiple injuries on September 16 by health officials and police in the commune, following a tip-off from locals.
Her body was covered in bruises as well as three deep wounds to her left thigh and in the soles of her feet which, doctors said, must have been caused by hot objects applied to the skin.
