Three people died and another five were injured when a bus crashed into a truck on Vietnam's first expressway in the southern province of Long An on Monday.

The accident happened when the 16-seat bus which was carrying eight people from the Mekong Delta's western region to Ho Chi Minh City on the HCMC Trung Luong Expressway crashed into a truck going in the same direction.

Nguyen Thi Phuong, 40, and seven-year-old Tran Ai My died on the spot. Others were rushed to a local hospital where driver Luu Vinh, 36, died.

Since the 39.8-kilometer-long was opened to traffic on March 2, at least ten accidents have taken place, mostly because drivers couldn't control their speed or failed to keep regulated distances between vehicles, local newspaper Tuoi Tre reported.
