Some 700 tons of woodchip sank when a cargo ship capsized at a seaport in the northern province of Thanh Hoa at Thursday night, port authorities said Friday.

The accident happened as the wood was being loaded onto Thanh Hai No.09 ship, anchored at the seaport in Quang Hung Commune, according to Vu Dinh Hong, representative from Thanh Hoa Port Authorities at Le Mon Seaport.

Discovering the 884-ton ship was leaning to the right side, Captain Nguyen Van Hoa ordered seven crew members to pump water to the left side for balance, Hong said, adding that the ship continued to tilt.

The crew then abandoned ship before it overturned, bringing 700 tons of woodchip and 1,000 liters of diesel to the sea, he added.

Related agencies are cooperating with authorities at the seaport to salvage the ship belonging to Thanh Hai-Hanoi Trade and Transport Company. They are also working to mitigate the environmental impacts of the incident.

The cause of the spill has yet to be identified.
