Vietnamese police have arrested a Canadian citizen and seven Vietnamese for allegedly running an illegal football betting website that had nearly 15,000 members in Vietnam.
Police said Nguyen Huu Khoi Khoa, 33, and his accomplice earned billions of dong in profits from payments of advertisers and members on his website Pro186.com.
Khoa migrated from Vietnam to Canada when he was 14 years old, according to the police. He returned in Ho Chi Minh City two years ago to set up the betting website, which used a kind of virtual currency called P-coins for transactions.
Members of the website had to buy P-coins through the site’s two agents by transferring money via bank accounts or buying pre-paid telecom scratch cards in order to bet on the football matches.
Each VND100,000 is equivalent to 2,000 P-coins.
The case is being investigated further.
