The owner of a newly opened restaurant in Can Tho City said a prosecutor who had a party there last weekend refused to pay the bill and even threatened to burn down his place.
Chin Nhieu said that at around 3 p.m. on December 20 four men came into his restaurant in Ninh Kieu District and ordered food and beer.
One of them claimed that he works for the district prosecutors’ office.
At around 7 p.m. they asked for the bill but wanted to delay payment.
Nhieu said the group threatened to burn the restaurant after he disagreed.
A police officer who sat at a table nearby calmed them down. However, the group later left the restaurant without paying the bill of VND632,000 (US$28).
Nhieu said before leaving, the prosecutor said the three men with him had just finished their jail terms and that he is a nephew of a retired police general.
On Monday, Nhieu went to the Ninh Kieu District Prosecutors’ Office to file a complaint, together with a video of the quarrel between him and the group of diners.
The chief of Ninh Kieu District Prosecutors’ Office, Nguyen Thi Hoang Mai Lan, confirmed that the man in the video works at her office.
She promised to look into the case and take necessary action, adding that the case could mar the reputation of the legal system.
