A Cambodian woman was caught at Ho Chi Minh City's Tan Son Nhat Airport trying to smuggle 5.2 kilograms of synthetic drugs from Qatar.

According to the airport police, they found some white powder in a checked-in suitcase belonging to Hom Kosal Saturday night, and tests established that it was methamphetamine.

The woman told the police that a man had hired her to bring the drugs from Benin in West Africa to Vietnam by air and then to Cambodia by road, and had paid her US$2,000. She transited in Qatar before flying to Vietnam.

She had earlier taken a flight from Bangkok to Benin to collect the drugs.

Investigations continue.

Elsewhere, in the northern province of Bac Giang, police recently seized 2.75 kilograms of heroin being transported in a car.

They said they saw a Lexus speeding on National Way 1A in Lang Giang District on Saturday night and signaled it to stop.

Its driver, Hoang Van Manh, failed to produce a license, and was taken to a local police station where a search of the car turned up the drugs in a suitcase along with more than $21,000 and VND5.4 million ($259).

But earlier, another person who had been in the car managed to escape under cover of darkness. The driver claimed he had been hired to drive the passenger and had no idea what he was transporting.

The police are investigating further.
