A passerby in the Ho Chi Minh City's Thu Duc District was beaten to death by four men after attempting to help a couple involved in a motorbike accident with the group late December 24.
Pham Duc Linh, 28, was rushed to the hospital after the attack, but died due to severe brain injuries three days later, news website Vietnamnet reported.
Linh witnessed the accident from a nearby beverage shop and went to help the couple after the four men drove away. The four men then returned, apparently to continue the initial quarrel they had picked with the couple, and upon seeing Linh helping them, attacked him.
Nguyen Van Thoi Tien, 19, smashed Linh's head twice with a rock.
Le Chi Thao, 22, then pounded Linh's head with a brick. Then Pham Vu Luan, 17, then struck him several times with a long cylindrical lamp.
The group picked up all the objects they used to beat Linh on the roadside.
A local police unit from the Rapid Response Team learned of the case while out on patrol and were able to arrest Tien quickly, while the other three were arrested after a few days in hiding.
The fourth member of the group was Le Tran Minh Vu, 18.
The group has admitted their crime and police have filed murder charges against all four members.
