A Nha Trang court has sent a 40-year-old businessman and his 17-year-old woman employee to jail for trafficking and possessing drugs.

Nguyen Thanh Binh, once named a "successful businessman" by a magazine published by the Vietnam Association of Small and Medium Enterprises, got seven and half years. It included a two-year suspended sentence he had got a few years ago for "injuring" people.

He had been caught with 3.4 grams of methamphetamine during a police raid on his Thien Binh 2 Hotel in October last year.

Many of the hotel's guests were found to be high on drugs, and told the police they had bought the drugs from Binh.

Nguyen Thi Hoang Anh, Binh's employee, was found possessing six meth tablets weighing a total of 1.84 grams. She was sentenced to 15 months in prison.

Vietnam has some of the world's toughest drug laws. Those convicted of smuggling more than 600 grams of heroin or more than 2.5 kilograms of methamphetamine face the death penalty.
