A 49-year-old man was found asleep at the wheel of an empty bus after crashing into a truck, a lamp post and a ditch in the central province of Quang Ngai on Sunday.
No casualties were reported in the accident, though police took the driver, Nguyen The Cuong, to a hospital after they found him passed out near the scene of the accident, unconscious and reeking of alcohol.
Witnesses told Thanh Nien that the bus zigzagged a few hundreds of meters down a road connecting National Road 1A and Dung Quat port before swiping a truck traveling in the opposite direction and crashing into a lamp post.
The bus only finally came to a halt after settling into a ditch.
After the collisions, the bus lost one of its doors and two rear mirrors.
Binh Son District’s police say the bus was hired by a travel company to take 19 employees from the Quang Tri Province Center for Social Diseases Prevention on tours to the central beach town of Nha Trang and the Central Highlands resort town of Dalat.
On their way home, Sunday, the group stopped in Quang Ngai for a lunch break. During the break, Cuong verbally offended the tourists as they complained about the low quality of his bus. So the travel company assigned another bus to drive them home.
Cuong left for Dung Quat port later that day.
Under existing laws, a driver may be fined as much as VND15 million (US$711) and have his license revoked for two months, if he's found driving under the influence of alcohol.
