Two passengers died and 15 others were injured after a bus drove through a handrail and off a bridge in the central province of Binh Dinh on Sunday.

The accident happened at 11 p.m. when the bus driven by Ho Van Do, 36, was on its way from Nghe An Province to Ho Chi Minh City.

When the bus, filled with 50 passengers, drove across Dai Thanh Bridge on National Highway 1A in Binh Dinh's Phu My District, the vehicle crashed through the safety handrail and fell on its side to the foot of the bridge.

Nguyen Thi Luong, 45, and Cao Tat Linh, 9, died on the spot.

Fifteen passengers were injured, five of them seriously.

They are being treated at Binh Dinh Province General Hospital.

The bus driver may have lost control of the vehicle as he reportedly tried to go past a container truck traveling the same direction, Tuoi Tre newspaper reported.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
