A 44-year-old bus driver has been sentenced to 10 years in jail over a tragic accident that killed 14 people and injured 32 others near Sa Pa in 2014.
Nguyen Huu Tho, a driver of Sao Viet Bus, was convicted of “violating traffic regulations causing serious consequences” by a court in Lao Cai Province on January 28.
According to the indictment, the bus left Sa Pa for Hanoi at 6 p.m. on September 1, 2014 with 48 people onboard, including Tho and his assistant Tran Quyet Thang, 24.
Around 40 minutes later, Tho went into the opposite lane and hit a car. The car crashed into a mountain side while the bus careered off the road and down a deep gorge.
Fourteen people on the bus died and 32 others were injured, including Tho.
The court has ordered Minh Thanh Phat Company, the operator of Sao Viet Bus, to compensate the victims.
