The Hanoi police have arrested a bus driver and his assistant after they caught them transporting hundreds of iPhones in their vehicle without documents.

Officers from the economic crime investigation division (PC46) flagged down the bus driven by Nguyen Van Son, 41, and his assistant Duong Van Huy, 28, at 5:30 a.m. on March 28 when it was heading for the city's My Dinh Commune from Mong Cai town across the border from China's Guangxi Province.

Inside, hidden under the vehicle's floorboards, they discovered 522 iPhone 4s and phone parts.

It took the police three hours to find them since the duo refused to reveal the hiding place, online newspaper vietnamplus.vn reported.

Lieutenant Colonel Thanh Kien Trung, head of the PC46's anti-smuggling and prohibited goods trade force, said it was the biggest ever bust of iPhone smuggling in Hanoi and the operation was very "sophisticated."

Son and Huy later told the police they had been hired to transport these items but did not provide further details.

The police are investigating further.
