Two men were asphyxiated in an underground biogas tank in Hanoi on Tuesday when they were attempting to find the gold which one of them had stolen and hid there a few days before.

Vuong Van Manh, 37, and his brother Vuong Van Quyet, 35, were on their way to return 21 taels (37.5 gm) of gold the former had stolen back to its owner, when first Quyet and then Manh entered the pit and died.

Quyet had gone first, but since he did not return after a while, Manh jumped in to look for him.

They were already dead when their father Vuong Van Hung, 68, found them.

Hung was hospitalized since he had also breathed in toxic gas, but his condition stabilized later. The tank is used to produce and store gas from plants and pig excrement.

They were taking the gold back to Uong Van De, 41, who had complained to the police about the robbery Tuesday.

Manh came under suspicion, and the police summoned him for questioning.

Later that day Hung met De and asked him to spare his son, promising to return the gold.

The police are investigating.
