An 11-year-old boy drowned while trying to rescue his 9-year-old brother from drowning in the Da Rang River in the south central province of Phu Yen on Thursday, the online newspaper Dan Tri reported.

Both boys drowned; the younger brother's body has yet to be recovered.

At around 4 pm, brothers Chau Tran Chi Dai, 11, and Chau Tran Chi Thien, 9, and three friends, went swimming in the Da Rang River in Tuy Hoa City.

The boys were teasing each other when Thien waded a bit further from the banks than the rest of the group.

He was soon swept under the water by the current.

Dai swam to rescue his brother, but was overpowered by the current as well.

After the other boys screamed for help, nearby residents rushed to the site. The residents recovered Dai's body shortly afterwards.

Thien's body had not been found as of Thursday evening.
