Ho Chi Minh City police said Friday they have arrested a Vietnamese couple who were illegally providing marriage brokering services for Chinese men seeking Vietnamese wives.

On Thursday, police raided the Thu Nghia Hotel in Binh Tan District, where To Van Tai and his wife Nguyen Thi Truc had arranged a "meeting" between four Vietnamese women and two Chinese men.

The police detained the couple and a Chinese broker who'd introduced the Chinese men to Tai and Truc.

The four women come from the Mekong Delta provinces of Vinh Long, Hau Giang, Kien Giang and Soc Trang.

Tai, 57, confessed to the police that he had been involved in the illegal marriage brokerage business since 2009.

He has organized meetings between Chinese men and Vietnamese women at the Thu Nghia Hotel over the last three months.

Four Chinese-Vietnamese marriages were successfully fixed at the hotel, he said.

Truc, 29, also acted as an interpreter for the Chinese men, charging each man US$100 for her services.

Tai pocketed $400 for each successful brokerage.

The couple said they usually looked for Vietnamese women in rural areas to introduce to Chinese men.
