A first grader in the south central province of Phu Yen drowned Wednesday inside school grounds.

Le Viet Lam fell into a 1.5 meter flooded hole while playing with his friends during break time. The hole sat just 40 meters from his classroom but the other children didn't notice what happened and they didn't call for help.

The school teachers discovered Lam around an hour later and rushed him to hospital but the boy couldn't be saved.

Vo Ngoc Phuc, the school's principal, said the commune government dug the hole in around 2002 or 2003 to gather soil for a road project.

Phuc said the school and local residents have asked the commune government to fill in the hole on a number of occasions.
