Three Vietnamese fishermen were killed when they were fishing with explosives in the waters of the Truong Sa (Spratly) Archipelago Monday, according to coast guards in the central province of Quang Ngai.
Initial information showed that they were crew members on a boat driven by Vo Van Vang of Binh Son District.
Coast guards said their bodies will be sent home, and that related agencies are investigating the accident. No further details were made available.
Blast fishing, also known as dynamite fishing, is illegal in Vietnam. It is not only destructive to the environment, but also a highly dangerous activity for those who engage in it.
Many local fishermen still use it, because it stuns marine life and make fish easy to collect.
