A pregnant woman was killed and a four-year-old girl was severely injured when the motorbike they were riding exploded in the northern province of Bac Ninh on Thursday.
According to witnesses, the accident happened right after Nguyen Thi Quynh, 29, left home on a Dream to take her daughter, Nguyen Khanh Van, to school.
The explosion flung them off the bike, and set the bike on fire.
Witnesses said the two were rushed to Bac Ninh General Hospital, where Quynh, who was one-month pregnant, died because of multiple injuries.
Meanwhile, Van had her legs amputated and is receiving treatment at Hanoi-based Viet Duc Hospital.
Initial information indicates that Quynh bought the motorbike, which was produced by Honda in Vietnam, in April.
An official from Honda Vietnam Co. Ltd. told Thanh Nien that the company has contacted its sale agencies and Bac Ninh's police division to acquire more information before commenting on the accident.
However, the official, who wished remain unnamed, said there was a possibility that the motorbike caught fire due to an electric or fuel leakage.
Meanwhile, such an explosion as described in reports about the accident is the first in the company's history, the official said.
