Police in the southern province of Dong Nai suspected that a group of tourists was responsible for a fire that burned down thousands of square meters of forest on Sunday.
Le Quang Nhan, deputy police chief of the southern province, said more than 300 people including fire police, forest rangers and locals spent nearly a whole day trying to put out the fire on top of Chua Chan Mountain.
Fire trucks could not reach the 840-meter peak and rescuers had to resort to mini extinguishers and water cans. The flames were controlled on Monday afternoon.
Nhan said some backpackers may have started the fire when grilling food and then forgotten to extinguish it before leaving.
Police are still investigating.
