Police in the central province of Thanh Hoa have taken a 28-year-old man into custody for allegedly blackmailing a bank into paying him over US$110,000 with a fake bomb.

According to initial investigations, at around 10.30 a.m. last Monday, Trinh Huu Quy placed a bag containing a box looking like a remote-control bomb and a letter at the Vietnam Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Industry and Trade's branch in Thanh Hoa Town's Lam Son Ward.

In the letter, Quy demanded the bank assign someone to bring him VND2 billion ($95,762) and $16,000 to an unoccupied land site within eight minutes, threatening that if the payment was late, he would activate the bomb.

However, police found Quy had used a fake bomb, and he was arrested two days later.
