A court in Hanoi Monday handed death and life sentences to three former employees of the Vietnam Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Agribank) for embezzling over VND45.8 billion (US$2.18 million).
Three other employees of the bank's branches in My Duc District were also jailed for letting Le Quang Khai, 30, and Nguyen Thanh Hai, 32, commit the embezzlement.
According to the indictment, Khai and Hai, who worked at two different branches in My Duc District, used the same scheme to steal money for betting on soccer games.
They used the passwords of other employees to access the domestic network system and close more than 177 saving books, a VnExpress newwire report quoted prosecutors as saying. Then, they transferred the money to fake accounts they had opened earlier, it said.
Khai, who took over VND34.5 billion ($1.64 million), received the death penalty, while Hai who misappropriated VND11.2 billion ($532,800) was sentenced to life.
The men were also convicted of "gambling" charges.
Prosecutors said the duo spent VND16 billion ($761,000) from their ill-gotten money to pay gambling debts to Le Van Hien, former chief of the accounting department of My Duc branch.
Hien, who was convicted of assisting Hai and Khai in their schemes, also got a life sentence.
According to prosecutors, their scheme succeeded because of a lack of responsibility shown by three other employees who received jail terms of between three and four years.
