A baggage handler at Noi Bai International Airport was caught attempting to sell 16 Samsung phones he allegedly stole out of an outbound shipment.
Cau Giay District’s police busted Tran Huu Duc, 22, on January 11, Nguoi Lao Dong (Laborers) newspaper reported on Friday.
The Noi Bai Cargo Terminal Services JSC employee reportedly confessed to having stolen the phones early that day.
He reportedly took the phones, which were produced and assembled in Vietnam, from a package that was to be sent down to Ho Chi Minh City before being exported abroad, according to the newspaper.
Last year VnExpress reported that another two employees were caught pocketing around 1,000 phone cards in a similar fashion.
Nguoi Lao Dong quoted the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam as saying that passengers and companies reported 12 such thefts in the last two years.
The paper cited annonymous airline sources as complaining that baggage handlers had collaborated to work around surveillance cameras and rules that restrict them from wearing clothing with pockets or carrying personal items on duty.
