Ho Chi Minh City police have arrested six people involved in a major automobile spare parts thievery gang.

The arrests were made early this month after an operation starting in July.

Police said the gang led by Nguyen Van Oi, 44, had been stealing parts and selling them to auto spare parts shops in districts 1 and 5.

The shops then sold the parts to many who had their cars' parts stolen, police said.

Among the six arrestees were Nguyen Van Uan, 56, who bought stolen spare parts from the thieves and sold them to automobile shops, and Le Viet Khoi, 41, who owns a shop in District 5.

Police in nearby provinces such as Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Binh Thuan and Long An have sent the files of dozens of automobile spare parts thievery cases and asked HCMC police to expand their investigations into the ring.
