The charity organization Loreto Vietnam-Australia Program (LVAP) Friday opened a new kindergarten in the south central province of Phu Yen.

The Son Thanh Dong Kindergarten, located in Son Thanh Dong Commune of Tay Hoa District, covers an area of 382 square meters. It is expected to welcome 60 children this year.

The kindergarten cost a total of VND2.16 billion (approx. US$103,800) to build, of which more than VND1.34 billion (approx. $65,000) was funded by the Loreto Program and the remaining raised by the district administration.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, LVAP CEO Trish Franklin said, "Quality early childhood education pays significant returns to children our future citizens.  Along with this, access to and availability of affordable early childhood learning programs help parents fulfill their responsibilities.

"School readiness can also be seen as a key foundational element and indicator of future life success and can produce lasting advantages in a variety of developmental spheres."

Last month, the Loreto Program helped renovate and equip a computer room at Le Loi Primary School in Ho Chi Minh City's suburban district of Nha Be.

Last week, the Ho Chi Minh City-based international non-governmental organization (INGO) opened a kindergarten in Khanh Binh Tay Commune of Tran Van Thoi District in the Mekong Delta province of Ca Mau.
