Police in northern Vietnam have busted a gang of armed thieves just as they were planning to found a shady debt collection agency.

The joint police forces of Hai Phong and Thai Nguyen Province arrested gang leader Nguyen Minh Hiep on Wednesday last week.

His potential company partner Tran Quoc Hung who owned a pawn shop, and six members of the gang, were also arrested.

Police said the gang was meeting at Hung's place in the northern province of Thai Nguyen. They were going to recover a debt for Hung to test their capability before the two sides form a company.

A gun with seven bullets was seized at the place, together with a grenade, some explosive and two swords.

Hiep, 24, caught the police's attention when his gang committed a series of robberies targetting taxi cab drivers in Hai Phong in June.

On Monday last week, Hiep received VND2 million from Hung, a 40-year-old who has served 12 months for gambling, to buy the gun to serve the debt recovery business.

The police also caught two people who supplied the gun to the gang on Friday. The suppliers were not identified.
