A foreign woman suffocated to death during a fire at a hostel in Ho Chi Minh City downtown Wednesday afternoon.
She was identified as Julieta Kohner, a 21-year-old Argentinean national.
The fire started at around 12:30pm on the first floor of the five-story Budget Saigon at 10 Nguyen Van Trang Street in District 1 where several foreign guests were staying.
Smoke quickly covered the building and startled passers-by.
Hostel guards and locals used a ladder to help the guests climb from the hotel's third floor to the rooftop of the house next door and finally get down to the ground.
Firefighters arrived at the scene ten minutes after the fire broke out and put it out at 1:45pm.
Half an hour later, the police found the body of a foreign woman whom they believe died of smoke inhalation.
Kohner reportedly had checked in at 6am and stayed in a room on the first floor.
Two other foreigners were rushed to hospital after fainting from lack of oxygen.
During the fire, smoke also spread to the nearby Hoa Sen (Lotus) University, forcing students there to evacuate.
Police are investigating further.
