A gay couple in the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang has recently grabbed attention among netizens after photos of their wedding were posted online.
Truong Van Hen, 22, and Nguyen Hoang Bao Quoc (age not known) of Ha Tien Town exchanged wedding vows on May 16 in a ceremony attended by their parents and hundreds of guests, the online newspaper VnExpress reported.
Thousands of onlookers gathered in front of the restaurant where the wedding took place to witness the homosexual couple cut cake and sip champagne.
Some of the people came to protest the wedding, demanding the couple to call it off.
The crowd of curiosity seekers caused traffic gridlock along the Phuong Thanh Street in Binh San Ward.
On May 27, online websites posted photos of the wedding and the congestion outside the restaurant, sparking a myriad of both positive and negative comments.
Although same sex marriage is outlawed in Vietnam, the wedding went smoothly without intervention from local authorities, according to the websites.
Previously, local media reported a total of three same sex weddings which were held in Hanoi, HCMC and Ca Mau Province.
