Private budget airline VietJetAir had to buy nearly 100 tickets from its competitor Jetstar on Thursday to get its passengers to their destination because maintenance on the aircraft scheduled to fly was not finished yet.
Hundreds of VietJetAir customers caused a scene at Noi Bai airport in Hanoi when flights to Ho Chi Minh City were delayed from 2:30 p.m. to 5:50 p.m., and then canceled, news website VnExpress reported.
"It was a very chaotic site. Everyone was angry," said Nguyen Van Thong, a customer.
The furor remained until 8 p.m. when the airline transferred nearly a hundred people, most of them elderly and children, to a Jetstar flight.
A source from VietJetAir said the company would refund passengers who demand their money back.
On August 1, it also canceled three flights between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, citing "technical problems."
VietJetAir entered the market last December as the newest airline in Vietnam. It provides flights to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Nha Trang and Hai Phong with three aircraft, with plans to raise the fleet to six aircraft by the year end.
In a controversial promotional effort, the company was fined VND20 million (US$951) for organizing a bikini show on its inaugural flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Nha Trang in the central coast on August 3.
