A Vietnamese American has been taken into custody in the central province of Khanh Hoa for shooting a man dead in what appears to be a hunting accident, the Dan Tri newspaper reported Saturday.
Nguyen Nam, 53, is also accused of violating wildlife protection regulations by shooting down a rare langur during his hunting trip at a forest in Cam Phuoc Dong Commune on March 13, the newswire quoted the Cam Ranh Town's People's Procuracy as saying.
According to initial information, that day, Nam, who was then visiting his hometown in the commune, went hunting in the forest with four locals.
After shooting two animals on a branch, he pointed his gun at an illuminating spot and fired.
However, it turned out that the target was Cao Thang, 41, one of the four people who accompanied Nam on the trip, the report said.
Thang died on the spot after being shot at his head.
Nam's gun is being tested by the Ministry of Public Security's Crime Science Institute, Dan Tri said, adding that if it is identified as being for military use, Nam will be investigated for illegal use of military weapons.
The case is being investigated further.
