A 66-year-old American teacher has been fined VND50 million (US$2,222) for causing a fatal accident in downtown Ho Chi Minh City last March.
At his trial Thursday the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Court said Wheeler Lloyd Stephan had been driving a motorbike in the wrong lane and without a driving license when he hit Le Minh Phung on March 2.
But Stephan would not be imprisoned because there were "extenuating circumstances," it said.
Stephan, a teacher at an international school in Binh Chanh District, had paid the victim’s family VND108 million and been honest about his crime, it added.
Phung’s family had withdrawn the complaint against him.
The accident happened at around 8:30 a.m. when Stephan and his wife Nguyen Thi Xuan were traveling on D2 Street in Binh Thanh District.
In trying to avoid a motorbike overtaking him on his right, he crossed the center line and crashed into Phung who was coming in the opposite direction.
He and his wife took Phung to a hospital by taxi.
But she was paralyzed due to a spine injury and died two months later.
Driving without a license and causing a fatal accident is punishable with a jail term of up to 10 years besides a fine of up to VND50 million.
