The Ministry of Transport has fined a Vietnamese passenger VND15 million (US$720) for voluntarily opening an emergency exit during a flight last month.

Nguyen Hoang Hoat, hailing from the northern city of Hai Phong, was onboard a Vietnam Airlines flight from Hai Phong to Da Nang on July 26.

Hoat opened an emergency exit during the flight because he was curious, according to inspectors.

The fine was imposed under a government decree against several violations of flight safety regulations such as smoking, using radio devices in banned areas and joking about explosive materials at airports or onboard aircraft.

The act of opening emergency exit during flight attracts fines between VND10 million and VND20 million.
