Tra Vinh police said on Friday they had arrested the province's chief agriculture inspector for allegedly receiving bribes from local firms instead of fining them for manufacturing substandard fertilizers.
Nguyen Van Troi, 44, chief inspector and Party deputy chief of the Tra Vinh Department of Agriculture and Rural Development was arrested on May 16 pending the results of a three-month investigation into the allegations.
Do Dat Van, 37, director of the Hung Dat Company, was arrested on the same day for procuring bribes.
Earlier, the provincial agriculture inspectors had collected fertilizer samples from local companies for testing.
After finding that the fertilizers of several companies did not meet quality requirements, Troi did not issue fines as regulations called for, but instead colluded with Van to demand bribes.
Van told the companies with violations transfer money into her account so she could forward it to Troi.
Investigators said they saw Van withdraw VND35 million (US$1,670) and hand the sum to Troi before they arrested them at their respective houses.
Tran Trung Hien, director of the Tra Vinh Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, told Tuoi Tre that he was completing relevant procedures to suspend Troi after being informed by police about the case.
He said he was very surprised because he "had never heard any rumors" about Troi's violations.
